Hijacked politically and negatively --- the origin of the phrase is Lead Belly's 1938 song, "Scottsboro Boys," where he advised listeners to "stay woke" and "keep their eyes open.” The phrase was a warning to African Americans traveling in Alabama to be aware of racial injustice and the dangers posed by the prejudiced legal system, referencing the false accusation and conviction of nine Black teenagers in Scottsboro, Alabama.
